A management position was opened somewhat surprisingly on Monday when Ned Yost announced his resignation from his position in Kansas City after a decade at the helm. The Royals will be spending the next few weeks trying to fill this position for the first time since before the 2010 season. Although the former Cardinals skipper and current Royals special advisor, Mike Matheny, looks like an opening candidate, he is not the only member of the organization to gain consideration for his role. Two assistants from Yost, bench coach Dale Sveum and quality control coach and catcher Pedro Grifol "are definitely in the running" Jeffrey Flanagan from MLB.com.
Sveum, 55, is about to conclude his sixth season on Yost's team and his second in his current role. He also has two full seasons of management experience at the major league level, having overseen the Cubs from 2012 to 2013. The Cubs recorded an unsightly record between 127 and 197 during Sveum's tenure, although these alignments have not been filled with talent. He will face the same problem not discussed at KC, at least initially, as the club has sewn his second consecutive season of 100 losses.
Grifol, who turns 50 in November, has spent seven years with the Royals – including in the past. While Grifol only succeeded in the low levels of miners (with the Seattle organization from 2003 to 2005 and in '12), he was among those who interviewed for the Baltimore post that was eventually awarded to Brandon Hyde during the last season.
