The fight for quantum supremacy may have just switched to Google. The research giant claims to have taken a major step in the development of quantum computing.
A recent article was published and quickly posted on the NASA website, which read that "this experience marks the first calculation that can only be performed on a quantum processor." The research paper entitled "Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor".
Google's internal quantum computer exploded through the calculation of a random number generator in just 3 minutes and 20 seconds, compared to the world's fastest supercomputer – Summit, which would take about 10,000 years. The authors of the paper wrote: "To our knowledge, this experiment marks the first calculation that can only be performed on a quantum processor"Awesome stuff.
This has no impact on the real world, but it is a monumental feat for Google and the quantum computing industry in general. Google does not stop there either, because it expects the power of quantum computers to advance to a "double exponential rate".
Google was thinking of having quantum supremacy before 2H 2019 because it had originally planned to dominate the quantum computing game in 2017 – but its 72-qubit system proved difficult to rule. After the 72 qubit system and its problems, Sycamore was created by Google. This system has been used to achieve quantum supremacy.
Quantum computing (the hell, all sectors of activity) is still struggling with IBM's chief researcher, Dario Gil, calling Google's claim to quantum supremacy "just wrong". Gil claims that Google's Quantum Computer is a specialized hardware designed to solve a problem and a single problem, unlike IBM's own adventures in quantum computing.
Still impressive anyway.
