NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A family tragedy occurred Monday morning at a Bronx subway station.
Police said a 45-year-old man holding his young daughter in arms jumped on the rails while a train was arriving at the station.
The man is dead and the little girl hurt.
Nick Caloway from CBS2 spoke with a good Samaritan who helped save the child.
Everything happened in front of a crowded platform of commuters. The father grabbed the little girl by the wrist and pulled her on the trail.
In a way, this little girl has survived.
A cell phone video shows the little girl coming out of the scuffed and bruised train, but alive.
The man who helped get this little girl out of the train calls Jairo Torres.
"I never think of anything. I just want to save the baby's life, "he told Caloway.
Moments earlier, around 8 am, Torres said the girl's father was on the phone when he suddenly grabbed the girl and jumped on the tracks.
Southbound train 4 was approaching Kingsbridge Road Station. He slowed down, but could not stop in time.
While almost everyone watched in horror, Torres jumped on the tracks and saw that the 45-year-old man was killed instantly. But then he saw that the little girl was moving.
She said, "What happened to my dad? "I said," Do not look at your daddy. Come to me. Ramp like a puppy, "says Torres.
The girl crawled, inch by inch. She was saved because the girl fell flat between the rails and stayed there. Torres placed her safely on the platform.
The witnesses call him a hero, but he says he's left with only help to put this little girl safe.
"I did not do it because people call me heroes. I do it because of the baby. Because in my heart, I feel that the baby is still alive. And I'm fine. The baby is still alive, "he said.
The witnesses who saw the tragedy unfold were traumatized.
"I am a mother and it devastated me like crazy. I watched it first-hand and I'm absolutely grateful that she's doing well, "said MP Jennifer Hub.
The girl's mother met the child in the hospital. The girl went home on Monday night.
Torres took his day off Monday, but plans to return to work tomorrow and take the train.
The police still do not know why the man jumped.
"It is a tragedy and our thoughts are going to family members as well as to our rail operator. It is a traumatic event for all involved," said the spokesman. MTA in a statement.
The girl's mother spoke to CBS2 on Monday night. The family thanked the strangers who helped the little girl. They said that she was doing well but that the family was suffering and wanted confidentiality.
