NEW YORK (AP) – A Bronx man died and his 5-year-old daughter was slightly injured on Monday after apparently jumping in front of a subway train while holding it, police and witnesses said.
The child was taken to a hospital in a stable state after the incident that occurred around 8 am, in front of horrified commuters, at the Kingsbridge Road station in the Bronx.
The father, identified as Fernando Balbuena-Flores, 45, was pronounced dead on the scene.
People jumped on the tracks to save the child,
"I saw this train come around the corner and I saw the guy jumping up and seeing the little feet hanging down," said a witness, Jennifer Hub, who described "at least 20, 30 people shouting "as the chaotic scene unfolded. .
As the train stopped, the video shows people jumping on the tracks to save the child, which was safely raised for passersby on the dock. Two good Samaritans were also treated for minor injuries.
"Thank God above," said the upset Hub, a mother of four who had just dropped off her own 6-year-old daughter at school.
Another witness, Leidy Martinez, said she was on the dock and saw both men go under the train.
Heard people screaming and ran to the stage
"When the train was coming, oh my god, he took that girl and jumped," 49-year-old Martinez told the New York Times.
Antonio Love, 32, one of the people who helped save the girl, said that he was walking near the platform when he heard screaming and that he ran to the stage where he said that another man was already helping the girl.
"The only thing she said, it's" dad, my dad ", said Love.
The girl, whose name was not disclosed, was treated for some cuts and was later reunited with her mother, Niurka Caraballo.
"The girl is in perfect condition," said the mother. "Thanks to God and to the angels who watched her, everything is fine except that now I am without my husband."
