Saquon Barkley has been the number one choice in most fantasy leagues this year, and he should now miss 4 to 8 weeks due to an ankle injury. The Giants are off for the 11th week and chances are we will not find Barkley on the field until the 12th week.
This is not ideal.
I would have liked the waiver thread to be the object of a half-turn that could replace Barkley's production, but this is obviously not the case. You can explore a few trades for low-cost candidates – James Conner, Joe Mixon, Todd Gurley, David Montgomery and potentially Damien Williams are worth exploring – but if not, you're probably trying to put a band-aid on your fancy list with an addition of wire waiver.
The running back that you will probably try to add this week (we have a lot of candidates mentioned below as well) is the player to which the Giants will turn as a substitute for Barkley in Wayne Gallman since he is the replacement of their list. The middle-distance half, who belongs to only 6% of CBS Sports' leagues, totals seven runs for 30 yards (4.3 yards per run) and one touchdown during the season, as well as three catches for 24 yards on five targets.
For his career, Gallman has six games with double digit numbers, most of them entering his rookie season in 2017, before Barkley is in the NFL. In four of those games, he scored at least 11 PPR points. In three of those games, he also had at least five catches. So, it could turn out to be a competent replacement option.
The Giants had a suspicious offensive line in 2017 and many thought that Eli Manning had been eliminated as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The offensive line has since been improved and Manning was finally replaced before the third week in Tampa Bay by Daniel Jones, who had a successful start beating the Buccaneers.
We should see the best version of Gallman in the NFL as a substitute for Barkley with a better attack around him, and he clearly deserves to be added in all the leagues. It is the # 1 to come back this week, and it's worth at least 20% of your FAAB budget.
Now, the only thing that should not be added Gallman is that the Giants will probably go back in the background. And it could be someone who will remove touches to Gallman based on his level of experience and his talent in the NFL.
Among the free agents that the Giants might consider are C. J. Anderson, Doug Martin, Alfred Morris and Jay Ajayi, the most likely candidate being Anderson since his release by Detroit last week. If you want to make a claim for Anderson now, he holds 13% of the shares in the CBS sports leagues.
The Giants also have Elijhaa Penny back on their roster, or they could promote John Hilliman off the training. Most likely, a veteran will be added to share the job with Gallman. But in any case, it should always be the guiding thread of the Giants until Barkley comes back.
There is also a chance that the Giants can trade their ball for a half-off. So, keep the Kenyan Drake from Miami on your radar, as the Dolphins are clearly not afraid to send talented players back to the lineup. That's the only reason I have not enrolled Drake among the candidates in free fall this week, with the possibility that the Giants will close a deal for him, although that's probably a long shot.
For the moment, try to add Gallman in all the leagues, especially if you are the manager of Fantasy with Barkley in your team. Nobody can replace his production, but I hope that your Fantasy team can stay afloat until his return.
Editor's Note: For this waiver column, we only examine players belonging to less than 65% of the CBS sports leagues.
