A teacher carries a girl with spina bifida during a field visit so that a 10-year-old Kentucky student in wheelchairs does not miss

When 10-year-old Ryan King got a school trip, his mother prepared him for disappointment. Ryan has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair. It is sometimes difficult for her to participate fully in many field trips and, although her school often helps her to find alternative activities, she has had to abstain in the past.

"His school was really great [field trips] for education, "Ryan's mother, Shelly King, told CBS News.The school in Kentucky planned a field trip to nearby Falls of the Ohio, a fossil bed on the Ohio River that required a hike on a rough terrain.

There is a museum that Ryan and his mother could have visited instead, but that would mean missing out on what other kids have to do.

Ryan was determined to go hiking, so his mother decided to try to wear Ryan in a special backpack. King was ready to accompany the trip and carry his daughter along the way, but someone offered him a suggestion.

A teacher by the name of Jim Freeman – who is not even Ryan's teacher – offered to wear it. "It was like, hey, I'm going to wear it, it's okay," King said.

That meant the whole world to Ryan, who, according to King, "is your average 10-year-old who wants to be independent of his mother, be with his friends and be cool."

Freeman said he was happy to take up this physical challenge. He hauled the fourth grader in 90-degree weather for about an hour, King said.

"It's 50 pounds of dead weight, she can not wrap your legs"King told CBS News." Usually I am used to doing these things for her because I am a mother and that is what mothers do. "But this time, Freeman's help was very much appreciated.

King posted pictures on Facebook showing the professor carrying his daughter and the story became viral. "To find out, he stepped up and was ready to use [the carrier] and take on this job – so many special-needs moms reached out and said it meant the world to see. "

Ryan also had a great time traveling – she said the other kids were jealous of her. "That's what I expected," said Ryan about his participation in the field visit.
