The San Francisco 49ers struggled on Sunday but managed to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to 3-0. The victory gives them the best possible start since 1998. They certainly can not be arrogant now because the brutal schedule begins. First, the 49ers will turn around and get healthy again, then face off against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night and an away game against the Los Angeles Rams. The two teams mentioned above played tonight and the Rams won. Ugh.
So there is a two-way tie for first place in NFC West. Let's see what happened in the division.
The Seahawks in Seattle also played a quarterback. The difference is that the Seahawks have been beaten. The New Orleans Saints came to Seattle in a match that no one could have described as a win for Seattle, but instead, a touchdown back to the punt made things interesting, and the Saints lined up at 27-7 before the 4th quarter.
The Seahawks had some of this Seahawk magic and started recovering with two touchdowns from Russell Wilson and one pass. It was not enough, and the Saints won 33-27. The question of whether Teddy Bridgewater has played well or whether the Seahawks have played badly will go around the week. In any case, the saints did the 49ers and the Rams a favor.
Los Angeles Rams (3-0)
The Rams held firm and came back late to beat the Cleveland Browns in Cleveland. I can not decide how much of what is on the Rams and what happened to the screaming game with the Browns. The Browns hit the end zone to catch up with seconds, but Baker Mayfield's four assists led to an interception and the Rams left Cleveland with a 20-13 victory.
The 49ers will face the Browns on Monday night's return. The Browns are beatable, but if the 49ers play that five-lap football style they played on Sunday, they will ring the bells and be eliminated by the end of the first quarter.
The Rams, on the other hand, had some problems in attack. They did not score a touchdown in the first period for one thing. Their run totaled 91 yards for another. While they won the match, they have things to clean. The 49ers have their own problems, but again, something seemed unacceptable with the Rams on Sunday night.
The division's lash goes to the Arizona Cardinals, where the one-dimensional Carolina Panthers totally dominated them. How bad of a beat? Quarterback Kyle Allen earned a score of 144.4.
Yuck.
Running back Christian McCaffrey also spent a day with 153 yards and a touchdown.
That said, Kyler Murray completed 69.8% of his passes, but made two choices and only accumulated 173 yards on 30 assists. It's not a lot of distance. Murray had the highest total of all Cardinals and his 69 rushing yards are more than his biggest receiver, Christian Kirk, who had ten receptions for 59 yards (again).
The Cardinals are out of order and I can not decide if it's a new offense, a rookie quarter, a bad team or all three – it's not a good performance.
In week 4
There is now a two-way link in the NFC West between the 49ers and the Rams. If only the Browns had been able to perform something besides repeated games. Ugh.
The first division game of the NFC West Division will take place in week 4, where the Cardinals and Seahawks will face each other. Expect a Seahawk victory, but it would certainly be good if the Cardinals could add to the Seahawks' total loss.
The Rams will welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's hard to know if the Bucs are good or bad. They defeated the Panthers in the second week, but then managed to get a rookie quarterback with the New York Giants.
