Cam Newton quarterback Cam Newton of Carolina Panthers is struggling with an injury to Lisfranc and may require surgery, according to reports released Tuesday.
Newton hopes to rest and his rehabilitation will keep him away from a procedure for the second time in 2019. He was operated on the shoulder in January.
Newton was sidelined after a 0-2 start in which he had difficulty with accuracy and did not run often. The lesion, by definition, is the displacement of the metatarsal bones, which often requires surgery and a long recovery process, which includes a hard cast that can go up to two months.
The NFL network, backed by a report by Joseph Person in Charlotte, said Kyle Allen would probably starter for several weeks. Allen threw four touchdown passes and guided the Panthers to their first win of the 2019 Sunday season in Arizona.
– Redskins head coach Jay Gruden told reporters that he was not worried about job security one day after his team lost his third consecutive game to start the season.
The Redskins, who lost 31-15 today against the Chicago Bears, visit the New York Giants (1-2) this weekend before welcoming the New England Patriots ( 3-0) in the fifth week.
Gruden, however, said he did not feel like coaching on a weekly basis. "No, I did not feel like that, but who knows?" said Gruden, 52 years old.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told reporters that he was expecting distant receiver Alshon Jeffery and tight Dallas Goedert to play Thursday in Green Bay.
However, Pederson said DeSean Jackson was "a little further" and that he probably would not return from his heart injury until the fifth week against the New York Jets. Jeffery was injured in the calf against the Atlanta Falcons in the second week and missed Sunday's loss against the Detroit Lions. He practiced in full on Tuesday.
Goedert was injured during the first week and dressed against Atlanta but did not play. He saw nine offensive shots against the Lions, amassing a target, which he dropped into the end zone. Goedert was also a full participant in Tuesday's practice.
The Minnesota Vikings renewed the contract with former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell and put compatriot receiver Chad Beebe on the injured list.
Treadwell, selected by Minnesota with the 23rd overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, was cut by the Vikings on Aug. 31. The 24-year-old recorded 35 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown in 2018.
Beebe's injured ankle in the Minnesota 34-14 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. An MRI on Monday revealed torn ligaments at the ankle for the 25-year-old, who has two catches for 70 yards this season.
– Chicago Bears defensive forward Akiem Hicks has apparently avoided significant right knee injuries, head coach Matt Nagy told reporters.
Hicks left Monday's win over the Redskins in the second half and was seen limping in the locker room next to the coaches. He wore a soft scarf on his knee. Nagy was vague in post-match comments on Hicks' status, saying he was suffering and adding "I hope he'll be fine".
Hicks, 29, has a sack and three hits in three games this season, having totaled 7.5 and 16 points in 2018, as he headed for his first pro Bowl selection.
Troy Aikman did not really appreciate an unfavorable comparison with quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.
After Athletic Kansas City tweeted "ICYMI: Patrick Mahomes threw 36% of Troy Aikman's career touchdowns, in about 8% of the matches," the Football Hall of Fame member and Fox analyst Sports reacted quickly with a response on Twitter.
"iCYMI: Tell me when he will have 33% of my Super Bowl titles," Aikman, 52, wrote on Monday. Aikman has won three Super Bowl rings during his 12-year career with the Dallas Cowboys. The six playoffs of the Pro Bowl racked up 32,942 yards with 165 touchdowns and 141 steals.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed quarterback Blaine Gabbert on the injured list a month after his left shoulder dislocation (without throwing) during a preseason game.
Injured August 23 against the Cleveland Browns, Gabbert has not coached since, although he remained in the lineup of 53 players during the first three weeks of the regular season. He will be eligible to be recalled from IR after week 11, if the team decides to do so.
Ryan Griffin was the replacement for Jameis Winston in the absence of Gabbert.
