A Florida grandmother is accused of killing her disabled grandson by drugging her because she was wondering who would care for him when he died.

Joel Parks, 30, was found dead Sunday in his grandmother's apartment in Bradenton, north of Sarasota, announced Captain Brian Thiers of the Bradenton Police Department at a conference of press Tuesday night. Parks' sister discovered her body, Thiers said.

Her grandmother, Lillian Parks, made remarks "spontaneous" and "relative" to the fact that she had voluntarily overdosed the man "with the intention of committing suicide," Thiers said. It was not known immediately which drug was being used.

She told the police that she "was worried about who would care for him in the event of his death".

Thiers said Joel, "unable to take care of himself," stayed in a house during the week and with Lillian at the weekend. His father was dead and he was separated from his mother.

Lillian Parks is under medical protection, said Thiers. The charges against her are ongoing and she will be arrested when she is discharged for medical reasons.
