The judge who chairs the case of a man accused of killing 22 people at one paso, Walmart is recused. She said in a statement that she knew one of the people killed on August 3.

Judge Angie Juárez Barill of the State District announced her challenge in court. assassination of Patrick Crusius in a statement issued Wednesday, a week after his assignment to the case.

She also noted that her term ended in December 2020 as she was a candidate for the Chief Justice of the 8th Texas Court of Appeals and not at her current seat. She stated that the case could be referred to a reasonably confident judge to bring it to an end.

Crusius, 21, of Allen, Texas, is still jailed without bail and is charged with the murder of several people. Prosecutors say that they will ask for the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Crusius returned to the police after the attack saying, "I am the shooter" and that it was targeting the Mexicans.

A manifesto purporting to have been written by the suspect and uploaded to the 8chan Web forum expressed concern over the growth of the Texas Hispanic population. Officials referenced the document and said the shooting could have a "connection" with a hate crime.
