The Cardinals hold the center of Newfoundland; Brewers qualify for playoffs
After sending the Cubs with a four-game series over the weekend, the Cardinals' path to Central NL seemed clear. Now, however, it's another matter. The Brewers almost never lose, even without MVP candidate Christian Yelich, and the Cardinals lost their second consecutive game in Arizona on Wednesday afternoon.
This one was a punch, too. The Cardinals had a 5-2 lead to finish at the bottom of the sixth. They then went seven points in a race disaster.
At about the same time as the loss of the Cardinals materialized, Brewers player Ryan Braun hit a grand slam:
The Brewers eventually won 9-2, which reduced the deficit in the central part to 1 and a half game with the magic number of Cardinals blocked on three for the third day in a row. On September 5, the Brewers played 7 games on 1/2. They have lost only twice since then, against 18 wins.
The Brewers will play Thursday in Cincinnati with the opportunity to play only one game of the Cardinals, who will remain inactive. Then, the Brewers will travel to Colorado for the last three games, while the Cardinals will face the rest of the Cubs, which will surely have closed Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez definitely. Nevertheless, Cubs probably want at least some level of retribution.
Speaking of the Cubs, with the Brewers' win, they will officially miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014, when Bryant was still in the miners category. The Mets were also officially eliminated as the Brewers and Nationals claimed (at least) the two wildcard places. The cardinals could be there if the brewers knocked them over.
Greinke flirts with perfecto, no-no
The first two from AL Cy Young who voted will come from Astros Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, in the order of your choice. Their starting number three in the playoffs nearly pitched a non-hitter.
Greinke's change had been deposited all night on the table and his command was impeccable. He also mingled with the ephus-like curved ball in the mid-sixties. He just had everything working.
Greinke was actually perfect until six o'clock, but a walk to Dee Gordon in the seventh ruined that. Austin Nola's hit in the ninth ruined the no-no, but it was still an incredible release.
Greinke has long been one of the best baseball pitchers and he is going to have a lawsuit in front of the Hall of Fame before all is said and done. We are now looking forward to the playoffs and realize he will be the third best pitcher of the overall lead. It's something.
Bad night for the Indians
The Indians lost to the White Sox with Shane Bieber on the hill while the two teams they pursued …
The twins win the Central
Thanks in part to two other circuits, the Twins defeated the Tigers and were defeated at the Detroit clubhouse, triggering a celebration unprecedented since 2010. The Twins are the champions of the Central League in 2019. Full story here.
The spokes are gaining ground
Charlie Morton opened the scoring in the sixth inning and the Yankees managed a single shot against the throws of the Rays. The Rays are victorious, which means they spend 1-1 / 1 game to the Indians in the playoff position with only three games remaining (the Indians still have four). The chances that the Rays miss the playoffs are rather low. The Indians have a tough battle with the last three games of the Rays against the Blue Jays, while the tribe will face the Nats.
Back to the Indians
… So, yes, the night was very hard for the Indians. The desperate victory of downtown AL is now officially withdrawn and they probably need to defeat to recover a wild card. Heck, even that might not be enough. As noted, the Rays play against the Blue Jays while the Indians have three games in DC to close the season. While the Nationals have won a playoff spot, they surely want to stay in first place in the Wild Card because the Brewers only have one game to win over .500 on the road and are unreal at home. My hunch is that the Nats are trying in the last set.
I would call the situation in Cleveland disastrous at this point – and we can not help but look back on a 3-1 lead in the World Series on the Cubs, and then lose in the ALDS after winning 102 games the following season. could have been with this kernel.
Alonso hits the number 51
Pete Alonso has long set the Mets club and NHL rookie record, but is now aiming for the MLB rookie record of 52, set by Aaron Judge in 2017. On Wednesday, Alonso completed his 51st career match. the season.
