A grand jury refused to lay charges against a police officer on leave from Los Angeles who shot and killed a man with a developmental disability in a Costco in June.
Riverside District Attorney Mike Hestrin announced the decision at a press conference on Wednesday.
Hestrin said the results of the investigation had been presented to a grand jury this month and that the panel had refused to dismiss the charges.
"One of the pieces of information that, I think, has not been contradicted, is that the officer on leave was hit by Kenneth French – hit on the head – and that He fell while he was holding his baby down, "said Hestrin. "And everything happened very quickly, about less than four seconds from the moment he hit until the moment he (Sanchez) shot."
Salvador Sanchez opened fire on June 14 at a Costco in Corona, east of Los Angeles, deadly killing Kenneth French, 32, and injuring his parents, Russell and Paola French.
Russell French was shot in the chest and abdomen and lost a kidney. Paola French was shot in the back and found in a coma.
Sanchez's lawyer, David Winslow, had already stated that the agent was shopping at Costco with his wife and that his son was in his arms when they were both "beaten." ground". Sanchez said he was assaulted without provocation.
A French family lawyer said that family members thought Kenneth French, who was non-verbal, was suffering from schizophrenia and was not taking any medicine at the time.
Russell French said at a press conference last month that he had "begged" Sanchez not to shoot. "I told him we did not have guns and my son was sick."
