Staff Sgt. Ladonies P. Strong was charged with manslaughter, careless driving of a vehicle and impeding the seizure of property on September 13, according to a US Army statement. Strong also faces two breach specifications.
Strong must be the subject of a preliminary hearing in mid-October, according to the army. It's unclear if Strong has a lawyer.
The army has not yet decided whether the charges against Mr. Strong will be brought before a court martial, knowing that the decision will only be made after the hearing. Strong is assigned to task force 1-28 in Fort Benning, Georgia.
The incident remains under investigation.
Morgan was a senior in law and legal studies and a recruited athlete who was a "remarkable member of the army's fight team," said the academy in a statement in June.
Nineteen other cadets and two soldiers were also injured during the overthrow.
The cadets were in a medium-sized tactical vehicle and were heading for a land navigation course where they were going to do a map reading exercise, spokesperson for West Point, lieutenant. Christopher Ophardt said at the time.
