The Apple Watch Series 5 features a new battery technology and dismantling shows

A dismantling of the Apple Watch Series 5, yesterday, revealed that the internal components are essentially identical to those of the Series 4. iFixit has now given the disassembly treatment to the Apple Watch Series 5 40 mm. model of the year.

After the disassembly, the 40mm Apple Watch Series 5 features a new battery design with a new metal case, probably made of aluminum. Citing an Apple patent, iFixit assumes that the metal case is probably more efficient than the others.

The 40mm 5 series battery offers 10% more battery capacity, despite the fact that the battery compartment has changed:

This new metal case seems to be a more effective method for sealing batteries. In the Apple Watch Series 5, the overall size of the battery compartment does not seem to have changed much, if at all. But Apple has managed to accumulate 10% more battery capacity, and this patent seems to explain how.

The traditional aluminum pouches leave a wider seal than this new metal case, which means that Apple can theoretically make the most of previously lost spaces.

The new metal case also strengthens the battery physically, according to iFixit. This makes the battery less dangerous during repairs because the metal case can protect against accidental punctures.

In addition, the change suggests that Apple would be able to secure batteries on the device with screws, rather than glue:

Finally, and perhaps more importantly, the patent suggests that Apple wants to use this metal case design to attach the battery to the device with screws, which would allow them (hopefully) to jump the little restorative glue. Moreover, they would not be able to do it without additional external hooks that would otherwise take up more space.

Why did Apple just replace the 40mm Apple Watch Series 5 with this new battery? The 5-series 44 mm has a slightly larger battery, but with the traditional exterior of an aluminum pouch.
