When Patrick Mahomes will be out on the field in Detroit on Sunday, he will do something he has never done in his NFL career: he will start a game inside.
It's true, although Mahomes has made 20 starts in his career, he has not played in a regular-season game in a dome stage. During his university career, Mahomes played a total of four games inside, and if his numbers from these games are an indication, the Lions should be very scared by what the NFL's MVP might be putting them through on Sunday.
In these four college games, the former Texas Tech quarterback on average 492.25 passing yards and 4.75 touchdowns per game (to put that in perspective, Mahomes averaged only 366.6 yards in the away game).
The biggest indoor match of Mahomes came during a defeat against Baylor in 2014, while he had rushed for 598 yards and six touchdowns. The last match in the university hall of the quarterback took place in November 2016. It also took place against Baylor. Mahomes scored 586 yards and six touchdowns.
Although three of his four indoor games were against Baylor, Mahomes also played against LSU. In the 2015 Texas Bowl, the Chiefs' quarter put up 370 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-27 loss (Mahomes is 1-3 in his four home games, but it's hard to blame him for defeats, as Texas Tech averages 40.5 points per game).
Despite the monstrous figures he's published over his academic career, Mahomes does not think there's a big difference between playing outside and inside.
"I think if it's not like it's raining or it's snowing outside, then I do not think it makes a big difference," said Mahomes this week, via the Kansas City Star. "I know when you go there, you still have to play football, you still have to throw, I've played (indoors) a lot of times and, I mean, it looks like "Any other football match."
The Chiefs' quarterback also added that preparation for an indoor game is basically the same as for an outdoor game.
"We have been training indoors and have already played several games inside and we played in the preseason last year inside," he said. Mahomes. "So, get ready like any other football game.I think that's what you do, whether you're in a dome and it's snowing or that it's rain – you make sure that you are ready to succeed whatever the elements or circumstances are.
It's funny that Mahomes mentions that he's already played in a pre-season game inside, because that's probably the game where people started to notice how much he's was good. During the preseason season 2018, the Chiefs traveled to Atlanta in a game where Mahomes did that….
The impressive part of this milestone is not that Mahomes launched a 69-yard touchdown pass, it's already happened many times. The impressive part is that the pass has traveled an absurd 68.6 meters in the air.
To put this in perspective, no NFL quarterback has launched a TD pass that has traveled as far in the air in the last three seasons (the NFL only monitors aerodromes in 2016).
In addition to Mahomes, the Lions could have another problem on Sunday and it's the fact that Matt Patricia has struggled every time he had to face one of Andy Reid's crimes in Kansas City. Reid has been coaching Kansas City since 2013 and, during his Chiefs career, he competed three times for a Patricia defense (Patricia was the Patriots' Defensive Coordinator until 2017). In all three games, the Chiefs averaged 34.3 points against Alex Smith at quarterback. With Mahomes playing inside, it will not be surprising at all that the Chiefs exceed that number this week.
