"I thought I was punk, that someone was bothering me," said Stephanie Lay, resident of Windham, at WCSH-TV.
UnitedHealthcare's letters were sent to Bryce, Lay's son, who is 19 years old and has autism. They were sent to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services in Cincinnati.
"Where is the ME DHHS office in Cincinnati, Ohio?" she asks.
Most of the letters indicated that the company had refused a payment of $ 54. Others said that payments were denied for $ 0, Lay said, for claims that had never been made.

The irony, Lay said, is that each letter announced a "Go Paperless" initiative.
A spokeswoman for UnitedHealthcare said the company was reviewing the issue.
