McDonald said that he will sell what he calls the "P.L.T." – for plants, lettuce and tomato sandwich for 12 weeks starting September 30 in 28 restaurants in Ontario, Canada. "With customers' interest in herbal options having increased rapidly, our curiosity has also stung," wrote Ann Wahlgren, vice president of overall menu strategy at McDonald's. "We have kept an eye on this emerging trend and are now ready to learn more by performing a test on one of our markets."

Herbal meat products have gained popularity, with startups such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods marketing pea or soy pies that mimic the taste and texture of meat. Beyond the meat in May, Wall Street's expectations were completely destroyed when its stock price climbed 163% on its public market debut.

This is also not McDonald's first foray into herbal meat. In April, she launched in Germany a "soy and wheat pie" called "Big Vegan", one of McDonald's largest international markets. It also offers vegan items in Sweden and Finland.

But the new test in North America suggests that McDonald's could soon roll out meatless burgers on its own territory. Other fast food chains that have put herbal products on their menus this year include: Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Tim Horton's.
