How to use the reduced data mode of Apple in iOS 13 and what you get

[ad_1]

Apple has introduced a new feature with iOS 13 that allows you to possibly save the use of data by reducing network activity.

It's a little hidden in the settings, but this Low Data mode will help you when you approach your data limit.

It's a little hidden in the settings, but this Low Data mode will help you when you approach your data limit.

Since 2015, we had the low power mode since iOS 9, but Apple has added a similar new option that allows you to better control the cellular or Wi-Fi data used by your iPhone or iPad, or by the applications that they contain.

With the low data mode, you can reduce the amount of data used and, because of the way Apple has implemented this feature, you can effectively prioritize what you want.

Apple's own applications

As you might expect, Apple applications and services are designed to work with limited data mode.

Once you turn it on, your iPhone or iPad will automatically stop downloading items. You will not get the apps or music you buy on your other devices unless you choose to download them.

Similarly, Apple News will not update many updates and will stop anticipating what you want to read later and quickly pre-extract this story.

High quality music streaming also stops, and when you use RealTime, it uses lower bandwidth to save bandwidth.

Third-party applications

It depends in part on the developers and what they choose to add to iOS, but each application will see some changes. For example, the update of the background application is disabled and backups or all automatic downloads also stop.

As with Apple Music and FaceTime, any audio or video broadcast will be of a lower quality than the one you usually live.

Temporary measure

You will not use the low data mode all the time. The quality of what you consume on your iPhone will be lower if you use it, so you only use it when it is needed.

However, when necessary, it will be so useful. Maybe you are on a case where you have a specific data limit and you know that you are approaching it. Enabling this option will help you stay within your limit.

And then, likewise, you could be in a weak signal area and while everything is working, it takes longer and your battery discharges further.

In these cases, enable the Low Data mode and you will appreciate the difference.

You will appreciate it especially when you want to do something specific. If you need to download a certain application, you can do it. Low Data mode will not prevent you, it will only limit automatic downloads.

So, the download you choose to start is the one that will happen. This is the priority of your needs.

Wi-Fi or cellular

The weak data mode is a good idea, we just want it to be faster to enable and disable. In fact, you must enable Low Data mode separately for each Wi-Fi network you use, and then for your cellular connection. If you use a dual SIM card, you must also enable or disable it for each cellular plan.

To activate it on a Wi-Fi network, go to Settings, Wireless, then press the I button next to the name of any network.

Press the Low Data Mode button, and you're done. For Wi-Fi.

For cellular, you also go to Settings, but then Cellular and the Cellular data options.

If your iPhone is not configured for the US language, you will see the same sections instead Mobile data and Mobile data options.

In either case, once you've tapped the data options, you'll find a toggle on / off for Low data mode.

It's not like it's a slow chore to turn this feature on or off for one or two cell plans, then for one or more Wi-Fi networks. But not only do you have to do it for each of these options, but you must also remember that you have done it.

There is no visible indicator for Low Data mode, unlike the Low Power mode. You can only see that it is enabled by either going back into the settings or noticing that some features are disabled.

Good start

We would like to see some kind of indicator on the screen. More than that, however, it would be interesting if the Low Data mode emulates its brother from the Low Power mode and becomes an option in Control Center.

And for the moment, there is no way to create a shortcut to do it. A trigger based on the location or even simply synchronized to enable or disable it would be ideal.

Still, maybe Apple has done nothing of the sort, because the company knows that you will never be able to permanently enable and disable the weak data mode. This will never be a feature that you will use five times an hour. But when you use it, it will prove very useful.
