The New York Rangers won their second pre-season win with a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers tonight. The match was to be decided in a shootout and Mika Zibanejad was the only scorer of the third round. Henrik Lundqvist has also achieved his best pre-season performance and looks ready for the start of the season.
The first period was rather difficult for both teams, as neither the Flyers nor the Rangers could get anything. The passes were barely at the mark, and many broken games led to botched hockey during the first 20 minutes. Later in the period, however, Philadelphia picked up some momentum with several dominant changes in the offensive zone.
Henrik Lundqvist also looked extremely bright during the period and held the Flyers off the board despite their waves.
Lias Andersson (2) – Vladislav Namestnikov (1) & Tony DeAngelo – 19h47 1st period
Finally, the Rangers had their legs tightened towards the end of the period and were rewarded by the first goal of the evening. Tony DeAngelo did a great job in passing the puck along the blue line and finally getting a shot on goal. DeAngelo's shot was a bit of a problem for Carter Hart. After some rebounds in the net, Lias Andersson scored his second goal of the pre-season. During the first period, the Rangers entered the locker room with a 1-0 lead in their possession.
Travis Konecny (2) – Kevin Hayes (2) & Claude Giroux (4) – 6:26 2nd period
After the Rangers grabbed first place at the end of the first period, the Flyers were able to tie the game early in the second. Kevin Hayes' good pass from the corner took two deflections ahead and slipped behind Henrik Lundqvist. Just before the puck crossed the line, Travis Konecny's skate took off and the goal was credited to him.
Shooting
Apart from one goal each for one or the other team, this match was to be decided in a shootout and the Rangers prevailed. Henrik Lundqvist played excellently all night and continued to play that way. Mika Zibanejad was the only scorer in the shootout after a quick shot in the back and returning the puck over Carter Hart.
After Thursday's shootout victory over Philadelphia, the Rangers will have one more game on their pre-season schedule. They will face the New York Islanders on Saturday in Bridgeport, Connecticut, before reducing their list to 23 players.
