HP's latest Chromebooks, the x360s 12b and 14b, are the first to support the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI), the new standard that allows compatible pens to work seamlessly across devices. The Chromebooks were launched as part of a first wave of USI 1.0 devices, which means they should be compatible with all published USI styli, in addition to HP's $ 70 stylus, due out in November.

The launch of the first USI aircraft has been long in coming. The initiative was launched in 2015, but it was only at the beginning of last year that Google agreed to take over the standard. Yesterday, the Universal Standards Initiative announced that 12 companies were marketing their first USI compatible devices, including Hanvon, Maxeye and Sunwoda styli, as well as HP Chromebooks. Unfortunately, there is no mention of a stylus from Wacom, a leading pen manufacturer, but the company is listed as a member of the USI with Samsung, a Note device manufacturer with a stylus.

A promotional video published in 2017 lists many of the benefits of USI. You can not only use the same pen on multiple devices, but also use a USI stylus, such as brush stroke and color settings. Up to six pens can display one screen at a time and the communication is bidirectional, which, according to the USI organization, allows it to offer more consistent performance in areas subject to many interferences radio.

Apart from their support for USI 1.0, HP Chromebooks are a more typical budget case. Both models have 360-degree hinges that allow them to switch their screens and use them as a tablet (which is useful considering the stylus support), 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and Intel Celeron N4000 dual-core processors at 1.1 GHz. processors. The most significant difference between the two is their displays. The x360 12b model has a 1366 x 912 resolution screen of 12 inches and the 14b has a 1366 x 768 resolution screen of 14 inches.

The HP x360 12b Chromebook starts at $ 359, while the 14b x360 14b costs $ 20 more, at $ 379. Both are on sale in the US later this month.
