The 2020 Democratic National Convention opening speech will feature 17 of the party’s “rising stars” from across the country, in a new presentation “redesigned” to deliver “powerful and diverse voices” from the “next generation” of party leaders.
On Sunday, Democratic leaders at the convention unveiled plans for the opening speech, which is due to take place on Tuesday, the second day of their virtual convention, under the theme “Leadership Matters.”

“The focus of the night will be on leaders and experts, veterans and activists, and all those who seek to unite and not to divide, and who are mobilizing – and not backing down – of a fight for what is right, ”Democratic Convention officials said Sunday.
Keynote attendees will include former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who was reportedly on Joe Biden’s nominee list; Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, who before being elected was an NFL player and civil rights lawyer focused on voting rights; Nevada State Senator Yvanna Cancela, who is the first Latina to serve in the State Senate; The mayor of Long Beach, California, Robert Garcia, the city’s first openly gay mayor and immigrant from Peru; and more.
“Amid all the chaos and crises facing our nation, Democrats are focused on finding new and innovative ways to engage more Americans than ever before, because this is how we will mobilize the nation to win Donald Trump in November, ”Democratic National Convention 2020 Joe Solmonese said in a statement Sunday.
“The convention’s opening address has always been a sign of the future of our party and our nation, and when Americans connect next week, they will find the smart and consistent leadership we need to face this. critical moment, ”he continued.
Convention officials said the keynote address “will bring together the powerful and diverse voices of the next generation of party leaders in a unified commitment to mobilize and lead at this critical time for the nation.”
“These elected young people will offer a diversity of different ideas and perspectives on how to move America forward, but they will all be talking about the future that we are building together – a future with Joe Biden at the helm,” said responsible.
The convention is scheduled to start on Monday August 17 and end on Thursday August 20 and will mark Joe Biden’s official transition from the party’s presumptive candidate to its official presidential candidate.
The convention will feature four evenings of programming starting at 9 p.m. EST each evening and ending at 11 p.m.

The Democratic convention was originally scheduled to take place at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Due to the pandemic, however, the party has moved almost the entire convention to go virtual, as it plans a “Convention Across America” that will include all 57 states and territories in its lineup.
In Milwaukee, the convention will have its production centered at the Wisconsin Center, a city convention center. During this time, delegates and speakers will stay at home, virtually casting their votes and giving their addresses.
To coordinate the massive media production involving two hours of programming over four consecutive nights, the DNC brought in Ricky Kirshner, nine-time Emmy winner and executive producer of the Tony Awards and Super Bowl for more than a decade each. Kirshner is a regular at the DNC, having worked on all conventions since 1992.

“This convention will be different from any previous convention in history,” Solmonese said in a press release. “It will reach more people than ever before and will truly be a convention across America for all Americans, regardless of which party you belong to or voted for in previous elections.”
He added, “This ‘unconventional’ convention will launch Joe Biden to victory in November.”
The DNC will bring four evenings of headliners to speak during its two-hour programming window. Additionally, each night will feature a particular theme aimed at highlighting Biden’s strengths and Trump’s weaknesses. Monday will be “We the People”, Tuesday will be “Leadership Matters”, Wednesday will be “A More Perfect Union” and Thursday will be “America’s Promise”.
The convention will feature prominent Democrats like Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn .; former First Lady Michelle Obama; Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y .; Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader, DN.Y .; former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-California; Hillary Clinton and more.
