Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa era took another step forward Monday when the future Dolphins franchise quarterback participated in his first padded football practice since suffering a posterior wall fracture and dislocation of the right hip in November.
There was a ton of anticipation on what Tagovailoa would do in the first practice open to reporters, but he was put into action on his first day. He was seen throwing two assists – two full assists – when most of his plays were transfers in three tag team practice sessions he ran on Monday.
What could be seen in the 11v11 action and even during some of his one-on-one work was fluid mobility which was impressive considering the extent of his injury.
He looked healthy – perhaps the biggest question for him – and mobile as he pulled out of his pocket to start the race.
“He looked healthy in the OTAs and walk-through type workouts. It will be the first on the pads. Yeah, he looked healthy,” said coach Brian Flores before the ‘training. “We take this one day at a time with Tua, as we do with every player, and hope he improves every day. Like any rookie, he needs the shots and he needs the reps to improve. and get better and give yourself a chance. “
Tagovailoa’s best pitch of the day came in a head-to-head when he hit veteran wide receiver Jakeem Grant with a deep touchdown pass, beating cornerback Nik Needham.
But on the first day of the competition, all eyes on Tagovailoa, the other quarterbacks of the Dolphins rose to the challenge.
Josh Rosen had the best throw of the day – a road touchdown for Grant on the left sideline – during team drills. Ryan Fitzpatrick, the outgoing veteran and favorite to start Week 1 of the season, also made a pair of shots disputed by DeVante Parker and Preston Williams.
The team is expected to give Tagovailoa more in practice as training camp unfolds.
