AUBURN, Alabama – The Auburn Tigers were told Monday they will open their 2020 football schedule on September 26 with a home game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Game time and TV coverage have yet to be announced for the league’s Week 1 games.
The Tigers’ original lineup included a Sept. 5 home opener against Alcorn State followed by a neutral site contest in Atlanta against North Carolina which will be played in Atlanta.
The Tigers were initially going to open the championship game on September 19 at Ole Miss. However, due to concerns about the covid-19 virus, the Southeastern Conference has decided that its 14 teams will only play conference games during the 2020 regular season and that the new opening day of the schedule will have. held three weeks later.
The SEC has also decided to add two games to the conference’s eight-game schedule. Auburn won a home contest against Tennessee and a road trip to South Carolina. The full schedule for the Tigers and other SEC teams is expected to be announced on the SEC network at 6 p.m. Monday.
The schedule changes also include the Southeastern Conference Championship game originally scheduled for December 5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. This contest is now scheduled to be played on December 19 in Atlanta.
Other SEC games announced on Monday, Sept. 26 include Florida to Ole Miss, Georgia to Arkansas, Tennessee to South Carolina, Alabama to Missouri, Mississippi State to LSU and Vanderbilt to Texas A&M.
Auburn, who just finished a 9-4 season in 2019, finished 5-3 in SEC games. Malzahn’s team were originally scheduled to start preseason practices on August 7, but that has been pushed back to today, which is also the first day of classes in Auburn’s fall semester.
The first two workouts are for shorts while workouts three and four can be shell (shoulder pads, helmets and shorts) and full pads can continue for practice number five. Teams are limited to 20 hours of football activity per week and five training days per week.
