Sarmistha Sen, 43, went for her usual morning jog on August 1. His body was found less than two hours later near a stream, the Plano Police Department said in a statement. Police called his death a homicide and an arrest affidavit said his death was the result of “blunt force injuries,” according to evidence found at the crime scene.
Bakari Abiona Moncrief of Frisco, Texas has been charged with capital murder in connection with Sen’s death and is being held at the Collin County Detention Center in McKinney, Texas, according to a press release from Plano Police.
Moncrief’s attorney, Joshua Andor, told CNN his client was arraigned Monday afternoon for murder, but couldn’t say anything else. Moncrief has also been charged in connection with a burglary that took place near the scene where Sen’s body was found, police said.
Moncrief was arrested for the burglary on August 1, according to records from the Collin County Jail, and according to police, Moncrief was identified as a person interested in Sen’s death at the time of his arrest.
The affidavit states that DNA testing linked Sen’s heist and murder and that Sen’s blood was found on Moncrief’s shirt as well as on his person.
Moncrief is being held on $ 10 million bail on the murder charge and $ 1 million bail on the burglary charge, prison records show.
Sen was an avid runner and cancer researcher
In addition to her husband, Sen leaves behind two children.
Local residents paid tribute to Sen by dropping off pairs of running shoes near the site where she was killed.
Sen was born in Sindri, India, later moved to Bangalore, then got married and moved to Plano in 2004, the CaringBridge site said. She studied at the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has worked in cancer research for most of her career, according to the site.
“Sarmistha lived a free and fearless life, inspiring many with her infectious energy and carefree smile,” the family wrote on CaringBridge. “Sarmistha was an avid runner, a gardener and a great cook. She practiced a healthy and mindful lifestyle and she could cook extremely healthy foods that tasted amazingly good.
“She was an Indian classical music singer by training and loved to teach and perform music. She was passionate about cancer care and has always supported cancer research.
