The HBO series gets almost half of its first-night audience through reruns and streaming.

The first of Lovecraft Country on HBO Sunday, audience figures very similar to those of Guardiansits debut in October 2019 – which would be an encouraging sign for the horror drama.

Lovecraft Country drew 760,000 viewers for its on-air premiere, which rose to 1.4 million with reruns and streaming. Additional plays and streaming made up about 46% of the total first night audience.

All of these figures are extremely similar to those of GuardiansOctober 20 premiere: The limited series had 799,000 on-air viewers for its debut, which rose to 1.5 million on all platforms on the first night – with reruns and digital making up 47% of the total.

HBO also says the show had the best digital premiere for any series on premium cable since – yes – Guardians, as well as the spring 2019 debut of Chernobyl. The linear numbers of Lovecraft Country were a little lower than those of Perry mason (884000) earlier this summer but before The foreigner (724,000) in January.

If he ends up following the model of these shows, Lovecraft Country – created by Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams – will end up with a solid following. Watchmen averaged around 7 million viewers per episode across all platforms during its run, while The foreigner has accumulated 9 million viewers. The first of Perry mason is also close to 9 million viewers since its debut on June 21, according to HBO.
