The most important new feature is the multi-device connection, which allows you to pair the WH-1000XM4 with two devices at the same time, switching between them at will. The WH-1000XM3 did not have this feature and it is a welcome addition here which makes the WH-1000XM4 more versatile and flexible. Sony has also added wear detection and voice chat features that interrupt playback when you remove the headset and when it detects that you are talking. The first feature is slightly more reliable than the second (you have to raise your voice a bit for the WH-1000XM4 to understand you’re talking), but they both work well enough to add to the premium nature of these headphones.
The WH-1000XM4 offers sound quality and active noise cancellation similar to that of the WH-1000XM3 and the associated mobile app allows you to customize audio settings such as equalizer. Small tweaks like updating the QN1 noise canceling chip algorithm for improved efficiency and improving digital sound processing chops take the WH-1000XM4 from super to superb. Additionally, the WH-1000XM4 has the same introductory price ($ 350) as the WH-1000XM3 when it was first released. Although expensive, this matches most competing wireless ANC headsets. If you’re in the market for a new pair and money isn’t an issue, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is the wireless headset to get.
