Ron Meyer is resigning from his post as vice president of NBCUniversal after revealing he made a private deal with a woman who tried to extort him after engaging in an extramarital affair.

It’s an embarrassing end to Meyer’s more than two-decade run at the entertainment giant. Meyer, a founder of CAA, rose to power in the studio and stayed there for much longer than most executives kept a grip on the reins in large part due to his deep relationships with leading actors, filmmakers. and industry players. . The news of his ouster shocked and upset many workers at the Burbank-based film and television studio.

In a statement, NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said Meyer behaved “in a way that, in our opinion, is not consistent with the policies or values of our company.”

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from NBCUniversal,” Meyer said in a statement. “I recently revealed to my family and the company that I had made a deal, under threat, with a woman outside the company who had made false accusations against me. Certainly, this is a woman with whom I had a very brief and consensual affair with many years ago. I made this disclosure because other parties became aware of the settlement and continually attempted to extort money from me or they intended to falsely implicate NBCUniversal, which had nothing to do with with this case, and publish false allegations about me.

It is not known if Meyer will be replaced at NBCUniversal. Even though the woman was not an NBCUniversal employee, Meyer appeared to have violated internal policies because he had not disclosed that the company was at risk in connection with its ongoing legal issues. His dismissal takes effect immediately.

“I have spent 25 years helping to develop and support an amazing business in a job that I love,” Meyer said in a statement. “It’s the people at this company that I will miss the most. I regret what happened and I feel sorry for all the people in my life that I may have let down, especially and most importantly, my family.

Meyer leaves at a time of major upheaval for NBCUniversal. Earlier this month, the company underwent a major corporate overhaul that streamlined its network and direct-to-consumer operations. As part of the reshuffle, NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy has been kicked out amid allegations of professional misconduct including racist, sexist and homophobic behavior.
