Uber Pass, the subscription service the company first launched in 2018, is now available nationwide – minus California.
The expansion of Pass – an Amazon Prime-style subscription service that allows Uber customers to pay monthly fees for discounted fares for Uber rides, Uber Eats deliveries, and scooter and bike travel – comes at a time. moment when the company struggles to maintain its financial footing during the coronavirus pandemic and wage a dramatic legal battle in its home state.
During its testing phase, Pass was available in only 10 US cities. Now, that has spread to over 200 cities, including New Haven, Columbus, Honolulu, Madison, Milwaukee, Nashville, New York, Portland, Seattle, and St. Louis.
For $ 24.99 per month, passengers will get 10% off UberX, UberXL and Uber Comfort rides; and 15% off Uber Black, Uber SUV and Uber Premier journeys. Pass prices will not be subject to typical external events such as weather, traffic or power surges, and there is no limit on the number of trips customers can make each month. Subscribers will also get 5% off their Uber Eats deliveries over $ 15 and free delivery.
The pass offered discounts on bicycle and scooter travel, but not anymore. Uber recently moved its Jump bike division to Lime as part of a $ 170 million investment deal, although it continues to offer electric scooters in a handful of cities.
Uber drivers will still receive the same income based on time and distance, with Uber covering the difference. This means, once again, that Uber is launching a new product that is unlikely to recover its own costs.
Uber customers who live in California are not eligible for the Ride Pass due to the company’s ongoing struggle over the status of its drivers. The company said it would shut down operations in the state entirely on August 20 rather than comply with a court ruling to classify its drivers as employees.
