The Dallas Cowboys have released defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who underwent end-of-season surgery on his ruptured right quadriceps tendon on Tuesday, and will save $ 3.25 million in 2020.
The move does not prevent McCoy from re-signing with the Cowboys in the future, but under the terms of a new contract.
There was an injury waiver as part of the deal on the three-year, $ 18 million deal McCoy signed as a free agent in March, which would cancel the contract in the future due to chronic tendonitis in the right knee / quadriceps.
McCoy will be allowed to keep his $ 3 million signing bonus, but his $ 2.5 million base salary is off the books, as is the $ 750,000 list bonus. He was set to earn $ 5 million in 2021, with $ 1.5 million guaranteed at the time of signing, and an additional $ 5.25 million in 2022 with $ 750,000 in roster bonuses each season.
Earlier Tuesday, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said he expected McCoy to continue to be on the squad during his rehab.
“Actually, Gerald, it was part of our conversation, he expressed not only a desire to be here and be a part of what we started here,” McCarthy said. “Obviously he’s very comfortable and that’s where he wants to be. That’s exactly what he communicated to me.”
The roster change came a day after McCoy tore his right quadriceps in training, an injury that required surgery. McCoy, 32, also told ESPN’s Ed Werder in a text message Monday that he plans to maintain a leadership role with the Cowboys.
“I will remain the mentor that I am for young people and I will do my part to get this team to where they need to go,” McCoy told Werder in the text.
