Health Notes: Francona, Rays, Hamels, Phils, Grandal

Indians Manager Terry Francona will miss their streak against the Pirates to undergo surgery for gastrointestinal issues, said Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com Relays. Bench coach Sandy Alomar is leading the squad during Francona’s absence. This is the second procedure Francona has undergone in the past month to resolve the issue. The MLBTR wishes him a speedy recovery and hopes to see him back in the Cleveland canoe as soon as possible.

• Injured Rays right handed Charlie morton came out of an “intense session” unscathed, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times written. Morton may return this weekend after entering the injured list on August 10 with an inflamed shoulder. It continued a disappointing season opener for Morton, who struggled in his first four starts. Meanwhile, reliever Oliver drake will begin a throwing program while recovering from right bicep tendonitis that forced him to IL on August 9. However, there is no word on a potential return date.
• Brave Manager Brian Snitker said on Tuesday that the left-hander Cole hamels is still “a little far” from throwing a mound, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets. The Braves are hoping Hamels will pitch this year, but time is obviously running out with the regular season ending in late September. Hamels was an off-season signing that made headlines for the Braves, but the triceps injury he suffered could prevent the waiting free agent from ever pitching for them.
• Phillies Central gardener Roman quinn received permission to withdraw from the COVID-19 injured list on Tuesday, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer was among those to report. Quinn went to IL last weekend after experiencing mild symptoms, although he did not test positive for the virus at the time. His last test came back negative, allowing him to join the team.
• the White Sox are hopeful that the receiver Yasmani Grandal will be back “by the end of the week,” according to manager Rick Renteria (via Chicago Sun-Times Daryl Van Schouwen). Grandal left the team’s game on Monday with a stiff back.
