To the iPhone’s credit, the white area of the flower appears a bit more on the background and the background is sharper. But overall, the Note 20 wins this round.

It offers 5x optical zoom and 10x hybrid optical zoom which delivers a considerably sharper image than what the iPhone 11 Pro Max can muster with its pure digital 10x zoom. You can see more detail in the tree that straddles this cove, as well as the surrounding leaves and pebbles in the foreground.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max captured a warmer portrait with more even lighting overall, and you can see it handles the sunlight bouncing off my right arm better. But the iPhone photo also looks a bit too hot. Still, of the two shots, I’d rather share the iPhone photo.

This trick is not that easy to call. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offers more punchy colors overall, especially in green, orange, and red peppers. But again, the iPhone 11 Pro Max produces more natural tones and more detail when you zoom in. There is more shine on all the peppers in the iPhone photo, and the ivory peppers in particular have more contrast than the Note 20. Wood cases are also sharper with the iPhone camera. .

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a few special camera features that really stand out from the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The first is Space Zoom, which goes up to 50x. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also benefits from a main sensor of 108 MP. It’s really designed to be used when you’re outdoors, but it gives you a lot of creative freedom to crop a photo after you shoot. The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 12 MP main sensor, so you can’t pull something like that out.
The iPhone 11 Pro has its own pretty cool photo feature in Deep Fusion, which captures numerous exposures in quick succession before sifting through every pixel by pixel to produce an optimized result.
It’s not a dramatic difference, but you can see that Deep Fusion offers more texture and detail in the hoodie, the shirt, and the faux brick wall that surrounds it. You can also further distinguish the thatch from the subject with Deep Fusion enabled.
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max: Verdict
The iPhone 11 Pro Max wins more laps in this competition and overall it captured better quality images in different lighting conditions. The iPhone tends to offer more realistic colors, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra leans towards more saturated hues, so what you prefer may depend on your tastes. I personally like the iPhone 11 Pro for portraits and selfies, and its Night mode is more efficient.
Where the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra takes the lead is with its 108MP sensor (which is ideal for cropping after the fact) and especially its more powerful zoom. The iPhone 11 Pro Max just can’t go as far as the Samsung, although the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro can narrow that gap with a telephoto that comes close.
This Galaxy Note 20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max head-to-head is very close, but overall the iPhone wins for picture quality and rating for versatility.
