Cindy McCain, widow of Senator John McCain, lent her voice to a video on Tuesday’s second night of the Democratic Convention that highlighted her late husband’s close friendship with presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“It was a friendship that shouldn’t have worked,” she says in the video, describing the relationship of her late husband, an Arizona Republican, and Biden, a Delaware Democrat.
She explains that her husband and Biden got to know each other in the 1970s, when McCain – recently returned from Navy service – was assigned to Biden’s military aid function and they traveled thousands of miles together during travel abroad.
JILL BIDEN, IN DNC SPEECH FROM OLD HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM, SAYS HUSBAND ‘WILL MAKE THE NATION WHOLE’
John McCain is heard in the video claiming his job was to carry Biden’s bags.
“The son of a gun never carried my bags,” Biden replies. “He was supposed to carry my bags, damn it, but he never carried my bags.”
Cindy McCain’s participation in the video was part of Democrats’ attempts to show Biden has garnered support from some longtime Republicans as he seeks to deny President Trump a second term in the November election.
But while McCain speaks highly of Biden in the video, she fails to offer explicit endorsement of his candidacy.
John McCain was the 2008 Republican presidential candidate against Barack Obama, who won the election with Biden as the running mate.
Cindy McCain is the latest Republican to join the Democrats’ convention. A number of notable former GOP elected officials – including former Ohio Governor John Kasich and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman – endorsed the alleged Democratic presidential candidate on Monday night.
BIDEN SLAMS TRUMP’S ‘MACHO CONCEPT’ OF NOT WEARING A MASK, CALLS IT ‘EGOTISTIC EXERCISE’
Cindy McCain and her daughter Meghan have openly criticized President Trump, and the family have long been friends with the Bidens. Trump personally targeted John McCain in 2015, saying the former POW was not a hero “because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
McCain subsequently angered Trump with his dramatic vote against the repeal of President Obama’s health care law. Before McCain died of cancer in August 2018, reports suggested he made an explicit request that Trump not be invited to his funeral.
Biden consoled Meghan McCain during an appearance on “The View” after her father was diagnosed with cancer which ultimately took his life. She said Biden contacted her often to offer support, after losing her own son Beau to the same cancer in 2015.

Although Meghan suggested in April to vote for Biden, Cindy made no explicit endorsement. In April of last year, amid rumors that the McCains would enter the election to support Biden, Cindy McCain tweeted that Biden was “a wonderful man and dear friend of the McCain family.”
“However,” she added at the time, “I have no intention of getting involved in presidential politics.”
The video of Biden’s friendship with McCain is one in a series of short documentaries created by Oscar-winning director Davis Guggenheim, who worked on “An Inconvenient Truth,” the 2006 climate change documentary featuring featuring former vice president Al Gore.
