Man found guilty of murdering Michael Jordan’s father gets parole

One of the two men convicted of murder Michael jordanThe father of the father is expected to be released from prison in three years, state officials said on Tuesday. Larry M. Demery, 44, has been granted a 2023 parole date by the North Carolina Parole Board.

“Under the agreement, the offender’s parole date is 08/06/2023,” the state said in a press release.

Parole was granted under a “tripartite agreement” between Demery, a state-run school and vocational program, and the Prisons Division. A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety told The Associated Press that Demery will receive help preparing for life after prison.

James Jordan was fatally shot on July 23, 1993, while sleeping in his car along a highway in North Carolina. Demery was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 after pleading guilty to the first degree of murder of the 56-year-old.

During his trial, Demery identified the shooter as Daniel Green, who was also convicted of the murder. North Carolina-based CBS affiliate WFMY-TV noted that the two accused each other of pulling the trigger in the years following the shooting. Green continues to maintain his innocence.

Both men were 18 years old at the time of the crime. Prosecutors said the motive for the shooting was theft.

A spokesperson for Michael Jordan declined to comment on the AP on Tuesday.
