More than 20,000 people have signed an online petition asking Netflix to withdraw the French film “Cuties”, claiming it “sexualizes an eleven-year-old child,” after Netflix released a trailer for the film this week.

“Parents [and] caregivers must be vigilant to protect children from sexualization, ”journalist Sonia Poulton wrote on Twitter. “Every day brings a new hell. Today’s low is ‘Cuties’ on Netflix. A twerking mess that makes 11 year old girls squeak like pros. Another consequence of strippers becoming pop stars [and] influence our young people. “
“[A] society that celebrates the sexualization of children in any form is doomed. [A]absolutely dreadful and grotesque stuff. [W]Why is this promoted by Netflix? Logan Hall, social media manager for The Daily Caller news site, wrote on Twitter.
“It’s so revealing that Netflix’s first major original aimed at the center for black girls is based on the explicit sexualization of 11-year-olds,” Scottish author Claire Heuchan wrote. Twitter. “Whether it’s actors or music, a sexualized image is too often the price of mainstream success for black women [and] girls. Shameful.”
“Netflix premieres * Cuties * on September 9… the promo image shows 11-year-olds dressed in inappropriate adult clothing (so bad I won’t tweet it),” brother Matthew Schneider wrote. Twitter. “I can’t believe we have to say pedophilia is bad … But many have been to Epstein’s Island.”
The film’s synopsis on Netflix reads: “Eleven-year-old Amy begins to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated by a free-spirited dance team.”
According to The Metro, the original synopsis read, “Amy, 11, is fascinated by a dance team that twerks. In hopes of joining them, she begins to explore her femininity, defying her family’s traditions.”

Netflix admitted to Metro that the synopsis had been “updated” to be more precise.

The film is the first film by Maïmouna Doucouré, 35 years old. The film was screened at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
