Cal Ripken Jr. reveals prostate cancer diagnosis

Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February but is now cancer-free after undergoing treatment.

Ripken, 59, revealed the news on Thursday. He said the cancer was caught early when he went to a urologist as a precaution.

The cancer was in Ripken’s prostate and he was operated on in March. Ripken said he is fully recovered and cancer free now. He added that “these few months have been quite miraculous”.

Cal Ripken Jr. wants to raise awareness with his story

Ripken said he believes he can raise awareness about the importance of early detection by sharing his story. He stressed the importance of showing up for annual physical exams and encouraged others to see a doctor and get checked.

Cal Ripken Jr. has yet to speak with Trey Mancini

Ripken said he has yet to speak to Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini. Mancini revealed he had a malignant tumor removed from his colon in March. Mancini, 28, is in chemotherapy and will not play during the 2020 MLB season.

Ripken was diagnosed around the same time as Mancini, but the two have yet to speak. Ripken said he didn’t talk about his diagnosis initially, but was ready to talk about it now.

Ripken added that he would be willing to speak with Mancini about his experience.
