A Tennessee Police Department is under fire from its own top cop after officers execute an arrest warrant against the home of an innocent family as they investigate a 16-year-old boy who had moved for months earlier, officials recently said.
Acting Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake said in a press release Wednesday that he suspended three cops and ordered the department’s Professional Accountability Office to conduct a full investigation into the search warrant for Tuesday morning, according to a press release. The three members – a lieutenant, a sergeant and an officer – will remain suspended until the end of the investigation.

Now, all search warrant requests submitted by an MNPD officer will need to be approved by a deputy police chief, rather than just the officer’s supervisor, the statement said.
Drake’s orders came just days after police issued a search warrant at Edgehill’s home shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday – and barged in to find a different and innocent family who had been living in the apartment ever since. four months, police said.

“No innocent family in Nashville, anywhere, should be subjected to what the mother and her two children went through on Tuesday morning,” Drake said. “They were woken up by a team of officers who knocked on their door and eventually hit her with a ram. It seems that the mother did not have time to come to the door before she was raped.
Drake also said members of the department’s west end had not “done their due diligence in confirming” that the teenager in question was even still living at the house. Upon closer examination, department officials determined that the 16-year-old and his mother moved out last summer, police said.

But the officers were using a database that “had not been updated since November 2018,” the statement said.
“There appears to have been a lack of confirmation by other means, including monitoring or verifying from human sources, that the 16-year-old was living there,” Drake said. “We have to be better than that, and I absolutely assure you that we will move forward.”

Of the three members who were suspended, Lt. Harrison Dooley, is a 12-year veteran of the force, while Sgt. Jeff Brown is 21 and Agent Michael Richardson is five.
Police provided photographs of Dooley and Richardson, but said they could not release an image of Brown because he is carrying out undercover work.
