JetBlue defended her flight attendant’s decision to remove a mother and her six children from a flight after her 2-year-old daughter failed to follow the airline’s coronavirus protocol and kept her mask on.

Chaya Bruck spoke of her shock when she was told of the airline’s insistence that all children two years and older should wear masks on board as her family attempted to get onto a flight to Orlando in New York on Wednesday.

“(My daughter) started to cry and whatever happened they said she had to wear it and she had to cover her nose over her mouth,” said Bruck. “I said, ‘What am I supposed to do? Should I tie her hands or her feet?’ Like, how am I supposed to force her to wear a mask? “WFTV reported.

A video widely shared on social media shows Bruck telling the flight attendant “do you realize she’s two years old?” to which she got the response: “I do, and also, it’s not something we can excuse.”

Other passengers stepped in to try and persuade the flight attendant that a child could not be expected to keep a mask on without a fight and voices rose in frustration. Due to the commotion in the cabin, all passengers were advised to pick up their bags and get off the plane.

Bruck and his children, along with another family who came to their defense, were not allowed to return to the flight which was delayed by nearly an hour.

In a statement, JetBlue said it is following its policy which all customers have been informed of by email and said: all travelers aged two and over “must wear a face covering their nose and mouth while throughout their journey, including when checking in and boarding., during the flight and disembarking. “

“Our crew members are ready to assist customers at the airport and on board who may require assistance,” the statement said.

“We have a flexible booking change policy for those who are unable to meet this requirement, and customers who refuse to follow these standards after crew member requests will be screened for further eligibility to travel. on JetBlue.

The airline said the family and other passengers removed from the flight “received a full refund and were escorted from the boarding gate.”

Bruck told CBS the incident was “extremely overwhelming and traumatic.”

JetBlue’s new coronavirus policies also ban face masks with vents or exhalation valves.

The airline also announced earlier this month that increasing the distance by blocking middle seats on larger planes and aisle seats on smaller planes, among those not traveling together, would be in place. at least until October.
