Louisiana police shoot black man with knife as he walks towards convenience store

Louisiana police shot and killed a black man who allegedly had a knife after ignoring orders to stop and walked away from them toward the entrance of a gas station convenience store.

Bystander’s video captured the shoot, which took place around 8 p.m. Friday in Lafayette, at a Shell gas station at the intersection of Northeast Evangeline Thruway and Chalmette Drive.

Video shows witnesses shouting ‘he got a knife’ and ‘they are going to shoot him’ as the man quickly walks away from the cops and walks towards the entrance to Shell station. ‘Go to the field!’ a witness is heard to plead in vain.

Rickasha Montgomery, the witness who filmed the video, told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser that the police had tasered the man to no effect.

Police say they pursued the suspect (above) for a half-mile on foot after receiving a disturbance call at a Circle K gas station, and ignored orders to stop.

Police said the incident took place after officers from the Layfayette Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a disruption at a Circle K gas station on Northeast Evangeline Thruway.

Officers say they chased the man on foot for about half a mile before the shooting took place at the Shell station, which was manned by several customers at the pumps.

Witnesses said police attempted to use a taser to subdue the man, but this apparently had no effect.

As the man approached the door of the busy convenience store, police opened fire and fired 11 times.

“ When I heard the shots I couldn’t hold my phone like I did on the first shoot, ” Montgomery told the announcer.

“I’m a little scared about this. I am traumatised. You’re so used to hearing about it, but I never thought I’d experience it, ” she added.

Louisiana State Police are resuming investigation into the shooting.

Authorities have not identified the man, but confirmed his death on Saturday.

Police have also so far refused to confirm whether the man was armed or how many officers opened fire.
