Wildfires and high temperatures are expected to smother the Bay Area with unhealthy air at least Wednesday.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air alert throughout the weekend on Saturday, banning fires of wood and other fuels.
Forecasts point to unhealthy outdoor conditions for sensitive groups throughout much of the Bay Area and unsanitary conditions for all residents of the Santa Clara Valley and much of the East Bay. Worst conditions are expected in San Jose and much of Alameda and Contra Costa counties through Wednesday, the agency said.
Smoke and particulate pollution have increased in the region due to major forest fires, and air quality is not expected to improve at moderate risk until Thursday, forecasters say. Officials encourage people to limit the time spent outdoors.
The National Weather Service also issued a red flag warning Sunday and Monday for Northern California. The warning comes as dry thunderstorms are expected to strike on Sunday, with little rain in the forecast.
The warning means weather conditions can trigger extreme fire behavior within 24 hours, according to Cal Fire.
