Delta Air Lines is expected to lay off 1,941 pilots in October, the carrier said in a note seen by Reuters on Monday that noted the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and declining demand for air travel.

In a note to the pilots, Delta’s chief flight operations officer John Laughter said there were about 11,200 active pilots still on Delta’s roster after a voluntary early departure program.

“We’re just overstaffed and faced with an incredibly difficult decision,” said Laughter.

Based on the network’s projections, Laughter said Delta would need 9,450 active pilots for the summer 2021 program, which the carrier said would be the peak in flight for the next 12-18 months.
Delta had sent out potential vacation warnings to 2,258 pilots, according to its pilots union.
