Madden NFL 21 is nowhere near as bad as its Reddit community would suggest, but football fans are frustrated with the state of the series. The new version drew anger earlier in the year when it announced that Franchise Mode updates extend to X-Factor capabilities and an extended Wild Card round. Honestly, the list of changes looks like patch notes rather than a brand new version.
EA Sports released a video statement to calm fans down, saying it was listening to the comments and considering improving the popular campaign mode in future entries, and while it hasn’t been particularly well received – well , at least temporarily appeased the players. Of course, the backlash was always going to kick in at some point, and it looks like the ten-hour EA Play free trial proved the flaw that shattered linebackers, uh, back.
Virtually every Tweet posted by Madden NFL’s Twitter account is filled with #FixMaddenFranchise responses. This is a similar campaign to FIFA 20 last year, and to be a fair publisher EA Sports seems to have responded in principle, with FIFA 21’s career mode looking like a significant step forward from admittedly low standards of the annual football simulation.
The real problem is that traditional modes like Franchise aren’t necessarily big wins for EA Sports, with models like Ultimate Team riddled with microtransactions. Even the new, street-inspired Yard Mode appears to be a way for the publisher to sell potentially expensive cosmetics. Fingers crossed, the company is careful and has big plans for the franchise in next year’s game.
