The American Athletic Conference has admitted a refereeing error that occurred at the end of the fourth quarter of Friday’s game between East Carolina and Tulsa, the league reported on Saturday.
At 1:52 to go into the game, field officials ruled Tulsa running back TK Wilkerson had escaped after gaining 11 yards on the first down, with East Carolina recovering at the line of 37 yards. The replay referee, however, canceled the field appeal after determining that the ball carrier had regained possession and was down.
After reviewing the video, the AAC released a statement on Saturday claiming that the replay manager was incorrect and that Wilkerson had not regained possession of the ball, and that the on-field decision to award the ball to East Carolina should not have been canceled.
The AAC communicated their findings to East Carolina and Tulsa, but the mistake did not change the outcome of the game.
“I don’t have much to say. The kids have played their butt. We should be sitting here singing the fight song for now,” ECU coach Mike Houston told reporters afterwards. the match, according to the Charlotte Observer.
“How do you speak to [my players] after that? I have coached nearly 200 ball games as a head coach in my life and over 100 at the college level, and I have never seen anything like it in my life. “
Tulsa won 34-30, scoring his third straight AAC victory since the Sept. 19 opening with a loss to Oklahoma State.
Houston said it was up to the school to ask the conference to review any referee appeals, and he said athletic director Jon Gilbert contacted the AAC after the game.
“Any calls that we want them to review, we can send them,” Houston said. “It doesn’t make you win. It’s the hard thing. It doesn’t give you victory, but obviously we’re going to send out the appeals that we think need to be considered.”
