2022 Cadillac Blackwing models to use new magnesium wheels

By now you should have heard the Blackwing models are coming. Cadillac says the Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V sedans are getting the expected high-power versions, expected in the summer of 2021 for the 2022 model year.

While several spy images of the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and its CT-4V counterpart have been spotted recently, the American brand does not fail to disclose information through official releases. The latest has something to do with the wheels, which will come in forged magnesium alloy.

The version also includes the first un-camouflaged image of the Blackwing V-Series models, which you can see at the top of this page. Forged magnesium wheels will be exclusive to Blackwing models, meaning the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing models will be the only GM products to use magnesium, going forward.

Forged magnesium alloy rims are lighter than aluminum alloys, which of course affects the unsprung weight of the car. And of course, lighter means a lower moment of inertia, affecting the overall performance of the vehicle due to the braking distance and faster acceleration. Magnesium also has the highest strength to weight ratio of any commonly available metal.

In September of this year, Cadillac officially released information on the CT5-V Blackwing, or more specifically on its seat backs. The CT5-V Blackwing seats will have carbon fiber material, which will lose more weight than rivals BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63.

The company, however, has not mentioned whether these seats will be available in the smaller CT4-V Blackwing. Either way, we’ll surely know more in the months to come until the reveal next year.
