Christian Pulisic has been removed from Chelsea’s starting XI to face Burnley after being injured in the pre-match warm-up.

Timo Werner took the 22-year-old’s place in the squad and scored a 70th-minute goal as Chelsea led a 3-0 win after Hakim Ziyech and Kurt Zouma also scored.

Pulisic missed Chelsea’s first three Premier League games of the season with a hamstring injury, but was included in the top 11 for the draws against Southampton, Sevilla and Manchester United.

The US international was engaged in the second half of the Blues 4-0 victory over Russian club Krasnodar in the Champions League in midweek and scored the last goal of the match in stoppage time.

After the game against Burnley, Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard indicated that Pulisic’s hamstrings were a concern again, although he expressed optimism that the injury was not serious.

“He felt something on his hamstrings,” Lampard told the BBC. “We tried to manage it mid-week, but we’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours. We’re talking minor, nothing serious.”

Later in his press conference, however, Lampard indicated that Pulisic was frustrated and needed a scan of his hamstrings.

“Christian had a little hamstring sensation so we had to pull him,” Lampard said. “He couldn’t play the game and he felt it in the warm-up.

“We’ll have to scan him, he’s frustrated because he’s got in shape and we put him down the week he comes and scores. He’s so keen on doing well for us but we have to scan him and see how it is. . I can’t give you an hour on that. “

With Saturday’s victory, Chelsea moved up to fourth in the league table, while Burnley remains at the lowest with just one point from his first six league appearances.

Ziyech has now scored in his first two starts for Chelsea, becoming the first Blues player to achieve the feat since Diego Costa in 2014.

Next up for Chelsea is a Champions League clash with Rennes on Wednesday before returning to the Premier League next weekend with a game against Sheffield United.
