Apple confirms sound issues and launches AirPods Pro service program

Apple’s service program explains that the issue affects a small percentage of AirPods Pro units manufactured before October 2020. Owners of a faulty pair of headphones will experience crackling or static sounds that increase during exercise, talking on the phone or in noisy environments. Other problems may be present with active noise cancellation from the headphones, which may include an unexpected loss of bass or sudden increase in background noise.

According to Apple, AirPods manufactured after October 2020 are not believed to be affected by the issue.

Although frustrating, the good news is that the affected AirPods Pro can be redeemed for free at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says staff will test the headphones to determine if one or both are affected, before arranging for a free replacement. The AirPods case is not affected by the issue and will not need to be replaced.

Apple’s AirPods Pro launched in October 2019, meaning anyone who purchased the headphones in their first year of availability could be affected by the issue. AirPods Pro owners have been complaining for months about weird cracking, static, and noise-canceling behavior, and a while back Apple acknowledged the problem and did the right thing.

If you own a pair of affected AirPods Pro, you have two years from the date of the initial sale to access Apple’s replacement program.
