LSU and Auburn will meet at the SEC in CBS Game of the Week Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the Plains. For the first time since 1999, neither version of the Tigers entered the Top 25 AP contest. LSU has won the last three clashes in this SEC West rivalry and seven of the last nine.

LSU will enter this game after an emphatic victory over South Carolina in Week 8. Freshman quarterback TJ Finley shone in place of Myles Brennan, who failed to take the win due to an upper body injury sustained against Missouri. Brennan has been practicing this week, but her status for Saturday afternoon is still pending.

Auburn escaped Ole Miss last weekend 35-28 thanks to a Bo Nix touchdown at Seth Williams with less than two minutes left. The offense seemed to find an identity with true first-year running back Tank Bigsby, who had 24 carries for 129 yards.

Storylines

LSU: All eyes will be on the quarterback, but the real news of last week’s win is secondary. The Tigers limited the Gamecocks to just 12 of 22 assists, and quarterback Collin Hill struggled to crack the attack. They had seven tackles for loss and five sacks, which regularly left the Gamecocks fighting an uphill battle.

The offense has been fine regardless of who takes the pictures. Wide receiver Terrace Marshall made at least two touchdowns in each of the first four games of the season, and Tyrion Davis-Price rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown last week. If Brennan takes the start, expect the offense to take on the look and feel we’ve grown used to seeing in the new LSU system. If it’s Finley take the snaps, offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger could get more creative with the attack going on knowing the kid has a game under his belt.

Auburn: The offense took an older turn last week with Bigsby and Nix using more area reading variations than in previous games. This is important because it is clear that Nix was shaken in the pocket thanks to an ineffective offensive line. This led him to bail out his pocket early and be unable to work out of the action game. The offensive line seemed more comfortable last week with an increased focus on the running game.

The defense was solid, especially in passing situations. Neither South Carolina nor Ole Miss have passed the 200-yard mark in the air, and the Tigers forced three picks in the same amount of time. Putting pressure on the LSU quarterback and letting the defense rear cook will go a long way towards anger-provoking Auburn.

Game prediction, choice

I’ll take LSU to win and cover. The offense is good enough to put pressure on coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chad Morris to panic and walk away from the running game. If and when this happens, the lights will be out for Auburn. Part of Nix’s success this year is due to Seth Williams having caught outbursts of desperation. It is simply not sustainable. Nix will make several mistakes in the fourth quarter for LSU to retire late. Choice: LSU (-3)
