Wear OS likely to be discontinued

The long-awaited OnePlus smartwatch might not work on Google’s Wear OS platform.

That’s the word according to tipster Max Jambor, who has been pretty vocal (and pretty precise) about the OnePlus smartwatch saga over the past few weeks.

Jambor took to Twitter to say:

It’s also worth noting that OnePlus is part of the China-based BBK group, which also includes Oppo and Realme, both of which entered the smartwatch space in 2020.

The Oppo Watch runs on Wear OS (the artist formerly known as Android Wear), but the Realme runs on a proprietary operating system.

Huawei and Samsung also have smartwatches on sale that also feature in-house platforms, so if OnePlus decides to enter the arena without Google, it’ll be in pretty good company.

A few weeks ago, Jambor suggested that the OnePlus smartwatch unveiling had been put on hold, although the Chinese smartphone giant teased its arrival in October.

OnePlus itself has released a Tweeter saying to himself, “Other things are happening in the OnePlus ecosystem. It’s just a matter of time.”

This tweet included a sketch from 2016 that seemed to suggest a watch was in the works.

If this information turns out to be correct, our wait for a OnePlus smartwatch continues. We first talked about it in 2014, when alleged images of a device using the OnePlus name OneWatch emerged.

OnePlus Watch reportedly delayed due to smartwatch wait

In 2015, co-founder Carl Pei, who recently left the company, revealed he was considering releasing a smartwatch but it had been canned at the last minute. Then earlier this year, a former employee revealed that OnePlus has been studying smartwatches over the past year.

The name OnePlus Watch with a model number W301GB then appeared on an IMDA certification site listing the device as a wearable watch.

All of this has happened over the past few months, which has fueled speculation that a smartwatch ad was on the horizon.
