A harmless line in an NFL Films production of the 1978 Dallas Cowboys flagship film led to a nickname that all non-Cowboys fans quickly began to hate.
The flagship film titled “The American Team” of the Cowboys. He stayed. It wasn’t awarded by any scientific method, but that didn’t stop Cowboys fans from singing about it for about four decades.
It also leads to a lot of Cowboys trolling. They are an easy target this season. They are 2-6 and fell again on Sunday, losing 24-19 to Pittsburgh. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger questioned the Cowboys’ title of “Team America” and then proclaimed the Steelers “Team of the World.”
Ben Roethlisberger: “We know that everyone comes for us. I don’t want to take pictures of anyone, but if you didn’t know who the USA team was you should have seen the stands and all the terrible towels. Dallas may be the US team, but we are the world team.

For higher entertainment value, read these quotes as if Roethlisberger was doing a WWE filming interview.
Only a few other teams can reasonably say they are even close to as popular as the Cowboys or the Steelers. Cowboys fans are apparently everywhere. Whenever the Steelers play a game on the road, their fans are an undeniable presence throughout the stadium.
You will never get a definitive answer on the most popular franchise. But after another loss, Cowboys fans had to listen to Roethlisberger rack up some more.
