BioWare made a name for itself back then with D&D computer games and outliers like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. However, he stuck a gold mine when he launched two original franchises, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Fans have been clamoring for sequels ever since, especially after the somewhat lackluster Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017. This new installment has just been confirmed for soon, but not until a remastered edition of the original trilogy arrives next year.
Mass Effect has widely praised the depth of its stories and connections, bringing BioWare’s popular storytelling style to modern action RPG gameplay. While not always viewed the same, the first three installments were pretty much seen as the “canon” of the franchise. Mass Effect Andromeda, which dramatically changed much of the gameplay, was not as warmly received in contrast.
So it’s no surprise that on day N7 BioWare announced a legendary new edition of Mass Effect that only covers the trilogy. It’s best not to have hope as the developer himself admits that this isn’t a remake or reinvention of the game. Instead, it’s more about bringing visuals to modern standards.
The Legendary Edition of Mass Effect will include all basic single-player content and DLC from the first three games, as well as weapons, armor, and promo packs. There is no specific date available beyond a 2021 launch window yet, but the game will be available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Details on backward compatibility and special improvements for the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 are promised later.
Mass Effect fans, however, might be more excited and, at the same time, worried about the series’ confirmed next chapter. It’s still in its infancy, says BioWare, so it has nothing to share. Hopefully, however, they have learned their lessons from Andromeda not to make the same mistakes.
