Vice President Mike Pence, head of the Coronavirus Task Force and former Trump Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley come under fire for trying to give credit for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to President Donald Trump and White House “Operation War Speed”.
Pfizer announced Monday morning that its coronavirus vaccine was 90% effective. The pharmaceutical giant refused to partner with the Trump administration to develop the drug, but instead worked with a German group.
Still, Pence was quick to grab the credit:
HUGE NEWS: thanks to the public-private partnership forged by the president @realDonaldTrump, @pfizer announced that its coronavirus vaccine trial is EFFECTIVE, preventing infection in 90% of its volunteers.
– Mike Pence (@Mike_Pence) November 9, 2020
Haley also tried to give Trump the credit:
News from the @pfizer a vaccine that is 90% effective is great news for the American people! A big thank you to @realDonaldTrump and Operation Warp Speed. This will be one of the most important actions taken by the administration in response to this pandemic. ❤️??#USStrong

They are both wrong.
Here’s the Pfizer CEO in September explaining why he pulled out of Trump’s program:
ICYMI: Why @Pfizer funding # Covid19 #vaccine development alone – instead of accepting government funding? $ PFE CEO Albert Bourla says: “I wanted to free our scientists from all bureaucracy. When you get money from someone… it always comes with strings. ” pic.twitter.com/t2IQPP9Wn4

On social media, Pence and Haley drew criticism:
THERE WAS NO PARTNERSHIP !!!! STOP LYING!! pic.twitter.com/OjVaJDn7Nj

As Pence claims the credit, Pfizer says he has NOT joined the administration’s partnership.
Dr Kathrin Jansen, head of vaccine development at Pfizer, told the NY Times: “We were never in Warp Speed… We never took money from the US government, or anyone. https://t.co/GScL3vodx9

A vaccine that had nothing to do with the Trump administration.

Nikki lies again.
Pfizer has rejected Trump’s “help”. https://t.co/22rZ77a5a1

This is not what Pfizer says: https://t.co/qdqGxrjQ7i

The era of lies is over. Try to adjust.

Pfizer specifically said that they are deliberately keeping their distance from the administration and not taking any federal money into producing the vaccine. It’s just a blatant lie. https://t.co/7uIVpAInvd

Fact Check: Pfizer developed its vaccine separately from “Operation Warp Speed,” spending $ 2 billion of its own money on research and development. https://t.co/lLuHFMADVq

@pfizer was not part of Warp Speed @NikkiHaley They did it on their own, without government help or money. Thank Pfizer and Pfizer alone.
